There is Hope for the Next Generation
I have great news! There is hope for the next generation. Once we understand the reasons that young people are leaving the Christian faith, especially the role that parents have played, we can fight back for the children in our lives. Yet, we must remember that this fight is a spiritual battle and it can only be won by following God’s ways.
The hard reality is that many of us have abandoned the way God showed us to parent in the Bible. So, in order to turn things around, we need to begin with humble repentance and then return to God’s way of parenting, which we call discipleship parenting.
What is Discipleship Parenting?
Discipleship parenting is returning to God's plan for parenting that we read about in Deuteronomy 6:6-9:
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.
Discipleship parenting involves three parts: teaching the truths of the Bible, boldly living them out, and standing on them.
3 Parts of Discipleship Parenting
God has given Christian parents the responsibility to teach their children the truths of the Bible, which means we need to know it. This happens by being people that read it on our own daily.
Actions speak louder than words. Our kids see if we are not living out what we teach them. We need to take God's Word and show them what it looks like to live it out and the adventure of following Jesus.
As parents, we need to be there to help our children stand against the attacks of this disbelieving world by equipping them with answers to the skeptical questions of the day.
