The landscape of our country is shifting. We are quickly going from a culture where Christianity and Judeo-Christian morals were valued and respected, to one where secular humanism and moral relativism are the only things tolerated. Our public schools (and many private ones too) now preach the religion of atheism under the disguise of evolution. Music, television, the media, as well as corporate America, are pushing the same agendas. In response, many churches and Christians have compromised the Bible’s teachings to cater to this shift in morality. This is the state of America right now. And our teens are some of the most vulnerable to this dangerous indoctrination.
The teen years are some of the most formative in a young person’s life. During middle school and high school, our young people slowly transition from being under their parents’ authority and guidance to forming their own worldview and stepping out on their own into the world. During these years, our young people are being bombarded with messages from the world through the constant noise of media, their friends, and even their trusted teachers.
While we hope that teens raised in the church can weather the storms of these attacks, the majority don’t. Statistics show that 60% of teens raised in the church will leave before adulthood. And a new poll just out this past month shows that Millennials are leaving the church in historic numbers. This is the next generation of the Church and Satan is snatching them away right before our eyes.
So what can we do?
The world’s lies are a blaring noise and they aren’t going to quiet. However, we have a weapon that has power unlike anything else; we have the Word of God, the only source of TRUTH.
For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12
We are more than evolved accidents; we are God’s treasured creation. God loves each one of us so much that he was willing to die for us, and has a plan and purpose for each one of our lives.
So how to we get this truth to our teens?
If they are going to hear it, we cannot just try to shout louder than the world. We need to come alongside them, build relationships, and walk with them through these teen years. As we stand alongside them, living out our faith with abandon and showing them how much we love them through our actions, we enter a place where the words we speak not only carry weight, but authority. Not only do these relationships with our young people open up the door for discipleship and the ability to share the truth and power of God’s Word, but they also put us in a place where our young people care about what we have to say because they see Christ living in us.
While our quickly deteriorating culture brings an increase of challenges and persecution for Christ followers, it also brings a sharper contrast to the hopelessness of a life without God and the joy-filled life of purpose and satisfaction in knowing Jesus. Letting the teens see this contrast in the way that we live our lives bring a huge opportunity to share the hope that we have.
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. – 1 Peter 3:15-16
Our whole purpose for starting Chosen Gen is to come alongside the parents and the Church in this fight for our next generation. Our mission is to offer support and encouragement in any way we can. We need to rise up together and fight for these young people. Let's join together in praying for them and their schools, providing opportunities to hear how the Bible applies to the issues of our time, and showing them that living for Christ is a life of purpose and adventure. We know that many believers are just as heartbroken as we are to see our young people walking away from the only true source of hope. However, there is no task too difficult for God and we believe that he has the power to bring about not only a revival in our next generation, but the ability to put a fire in their hearts and boldness to take this gospel message to every corner of the earth.
