Gift for a Lifetime

I celebrated a birthday and received a special gift from my oldest son. While he didn’t know it, I believe it is going to be one for a lifetime.

My first born son has taken up wood carving as a hobby. He was inspired to start when we stayed at a family friend’s home and saw all the amazing wood carvings throughout the place done by the friend. Since Christmas, when he received some wood carving tools, he has been working on his first project – a chickadee. Over time, he has been showing me the progress he has been making, taking a square block of wood and slowly shaping it nicely into a bird. This is the last update I had seen on the project.

On my birthday, I received a text from Katy asking if they could all stop in because our son had a gift for my work desk. They arrived and he excitedly handed me a bag. I moved the paper out of the way, reached down, and pulled out the gift. It was the completed chickadee he had been working on for weeks. He had finished shaping it, sanding it, painting it, and making a stand for it. I absolutely loved it and was incredibly proud of the job he did!

After my family left, I was sitting at my desk looking at the bird and thought of how fitting this gift was for this moment of my life – this pivotal year. As we shared in a previous adventure log – Faith or Fear – I am leaving my current job to start working on Chosen Gen full-time. We are fully committing to the mission of fighting for the next generation by offering all we have to God. We honestly don’t know what God has planned, but this bird offers me a daily reminder of his promise.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” - Matthew 6:25-27, 31-33

God is our heavenly Father and he is faithful to his word. As Katy and I build this ministry and create resources that encourage and equip parents to pass on their Christian faith, we trust that God will watch over us and provide us with everything we need. So, whether he blesses our work or uses it to get us to another place on our life’s journey, we have no doubt that he is good and will take care of us. I look forward to looking at this bird for the rest of my life remembering this truth and praising God for his faithfulness to it.

Thanks, Son. It was a wonderful gift.
